Syltefjord and Båtsfjord has always housed several rare bird species. Båtsfjord is a favorite wintering place for several species of eiders. King Eider , Long-tailed DuckSteller`s Ducks , just to name a few.


As a bird photographer, it is possible to capture up to three different species in one photo, which according to ornithologists is unique.






From early February through April, you have the chance to photograph

the King Eider (also known as Svalbard Eider) as close as 4 meters.





These birds winter in our harbor before again flying north to Svalbard, Novaia Semlia and Bear Island, where this species do their nesting.
